One of the largest and the most intricately carved temples of the complex, Kandariya Mahadev shares its platform with a small Mahadev shrine and the mid-sized Devi Jagdambi Temple. The temple measures about 30 meters in length and 20 meters in width. The temple's shikhara rises 35.3 meters above the ground.

Famous for its stunning temple architecture and intricate sculptures, Khajuraho is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a testament to the artistic brilliance of ancient India.

None of the erotic sculptures are, however, inside the main temple itself, giving rise to the speculations that this symbolizes that one needs to leave ones earthly desires outside before one can ascend a spiritual plane. I somehow do not think that was the idea. Because in other temples scattered across this belt, there are several that also have erotic sculptures inside the temple itself.

The big temple opposite the two mandaps is the mis-named Lakshman Temple. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu actually and is among the three largest temples in the Western Group of Temples. The temple is on a large, square platform and all sides of this platform are adorned with sculptures depicting several war stories, erotic rituals, and other glimpses from day-to-day lives.

Let me share the exact things to explore in a day at Khajuraho first and then we will share the exact sequence of things to do in Khajuraho to make best use of your time and explore it in much better way. So you should only do 2 things in one day at Khauraho : 1. Explore Western group of Temples in Khajuraho which is most beautiful set of temples in the town and very well maintained by Archeological Survey of India. 2. Raneh Fall, which is not only a waterfall but offers great forest experience, wildlife, nature walks around The Ken river and it’s canyon which has different kinds of huge rocks in 5 distinct colours.

2. Eastern Group of Temples

Khajuraho has three groups of temples - Western, Eastern and Southern. Of these, the Western Group of Temples is the most famous. This is the place that is most frequented by tourists. It is also at the center of Khajuraho, opposite the most happening marketplace and cafe street. It is also the place where the Light and Sound Show happens.

I am doing it so that you know my reasons and that may not align with your priorities. If it happens, you should skip this blogpost and create your own plan. 1. Khajuraho has more temples apart from it’s western group of temples and they are spread across different directions of the town. Most of the them are not so well maintained and smaller in comparison to what you will see in western clusture of temples. Architecture is also similar. Now this can be interesting for someone who wants to explore all temples along with understanding history & thought process associated with these temples. If you are that person, you simply forget about the Raneh falls and have a guide for full day exploration of these temples in Khajuraho town.

So if you can start your day early, you should start with visiting Raneh Falls, the canyon around Ken river with 5 coloured rocks and nature walks/drive. Why do I say that when we are talking about Khajuraho which is popular for it’s temples? Short answer is that you can explore Khajuraho temples in second half of the day and if you go to Raneh fall in the second half you lose the opportunity to find colourful birds & more wilflide. Going to Raneh Falls in early morning increases your chances of finding birds in the forest. What to expect at Raneh Fall, road condition and expenses involved? You need to drive for 20 kms to reach entry of Rahen fall, which takes 40 mins as this road is narrow but well built. When you reach entry gate, you will be charges 300 Rs for 4 wheeler. Charges are different for different vehicles. If you are not driving, you can take auto-rickshaw and entry charges for that are 200 Rs. Since it’s huge area to explore, you need to take vehicle inside to enjoy it well. That’s not even optional. You will also be charged 125 Rs for mandatory guide. Then you drive into the forest and reach a spot where you hand over the guide slip and a guide tag along with you. This person takes you to different places inside the forest to show Ken River, Wildlife, Trees, Birds, Colourful Canyon and finally the waterfall. It’s a lovely forest where you will also see spotted deers, sambhars, birds etc. You can also take a nature walk trails if time permits, but recommended is to go to all places guide shows here. It may take 2 hours to explore all these things at Rahen.

3. Visit Raneh Falls

To cut the suspense - no, we did not see a tiger. Though the way our guide was talking about it, we are more of an exception than a rule. Apparently during the morning safari, they had seen a tigress with cubs. But yes we saw a lot and it is definitely worth talking about.

4. Explore Panna National Park (Optional)

There are two main temples in the Southern Group of Temples in Khajuraho - Duladeo temple and Chaturbhuj Temple. The Duladeo temple is dedicated to Lord Shiv, whereas the Charturbhuj Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is also known as Chaturbhuj. This temple is also known as Jatakari temple as it is located in the village Jatakari near Khajuraho.

During the Chandela period, Khajuraho seems to have had a thriving Jain population and they were probably settled in the Eastern Part of the city. There are several Jain temples in various states of disrepair in this region. However, most the active ones are concentrated in a walled complex, the outer wall of which was constructed in the 19th century. The temple complex also boasts of a museum that displays Jain artifacts from the Chandela period. The complex also has provisions of preaching, studying, and boarding for Digambar monks. The complex therefore looks much more "alive" than the complex of the Western Group of Temples. The Western Group of Temple is situated on the right side of the Bamitha Road in Khajuraho and the Chausath Yogini temple that is a few meters before the actual Western Group of Temples compound, is also considered a part of the Western Group. While we were there, a new compound was being constructed. The man at the ticket counter told that the ultimate plan is to merge the complexes of the Chausath Yogini temple and the Western Group of temples and have one ticketed entry. As of now there is no ticket to see the Chausath Yogini temple.

Mid-Range (₹3,000–₹6,000)

We visited the Chausath Yogini temple in the evening. That temple is slightly elevated and offered good views of the sunset. However, we will talk about this amazing temple in another post. In this post, we will focus only on the temples within the ticketed compound.

💡 Tip: Stay close to the Western Group of Temples to save travel time.

As soon as you enter the compound, the first two temples are small shrines known as Devi Mandap and Varaha Mandap. The roof of the Devi Madap has been restored in the last century. You can make this out from the cemented filling that stands out amid the sandstone.

Day 1: Western Group Exploration

Much smaller than the Kandariya Mahadev Temple and a little larger than the Mahadev temple, the Devi Jagdambi temple has only one mandap and no inner path for a circumambulation. The temple however boasts of some of the most gorgeous sculptures in the Western Group of temples.

Day 2: Eastern + Southern Temples

  • Explore Southern Group of Temples
  • Relax and explore local markets

The walls of this temple seem to celebrate female beauty and also immortal love that is found in the most unusual places. There are panels of the deity of death, Yam or Yamraj, with Nirrti, personifying death, decay and sorrow, placed alongside scenes of love and tenderness.

There are sculptures of the trinity - Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiv in an eternal passionate embrace with their respective consorts. That is the beauty of it all - we allow our Gods the same human "failings" as us. Then why should we consider them as failings? Why should we be so embarrassed by our passions?

A panel on the south has a sculpture of Varaha with a human body and a boar's head, as he emerges from the primeval waters carrying Bhudevi, the goddess earth, out to safety. There is a hint of tenderness and affection as the goddess places her hand gently on the Varaha's snout, as if to thank him for rescuing her.

By Air

Now that we have addressed the elephant in the room, let's talk a bit about Khajuraho itself as well as its history. As you would also gain from the sound and light show, the city, when it was discovered had a dense population of date trees or Khajoors. And that led to it being called Khajuraho. By this time, about 85 temples had been erected in the city and it was a great religious center where grand festival of Shivratri was held, attended by a large number of people from nearby and faraway places. However, by this time, the Chandela Dynasty was in its downfall and the capital had been shifted from Khajuraho to Mahoba for security reasons. Slowly, the spellbinding city of Khajuraho faced its own decline and was abandoned. Reflecting back, that may have been a good thing to happen. Because after being abandoned, the temples did escape the worst of the wraths of Muslim invaders (though some plundering and destruction still happened). Also, time does not spare anything or anyone. So the temples were slowly overtaken by wilderness and forgotten by people.

By Road

There is one image on the south that is particularly moving. It is that of a woman leaning on her lover, in a fashion similar to a creeper climbing tree. The panels effectively depict a co-dependence of male and female energies, how one is incomplete without the other, and how together, they can create eternity.

We started with the giggles, and then slowly withdrew inward contemplating the purpose of these sculptures. But by the end of our tour, we had unquestioningly accepted the existence of these sculptures just like one would accept the existence of a tree in a forest.

The timings of the show changes according to the season. From October to February, the timing of the show in Hindi is 6:30PM to 7:25PM and that of the show in English is 7:40PM to 8:35PM. From March till September, the timings are 7:30PM to 8:25PM for Hindi and 8:40PM and 9:35PM for English. We opted for Hindi show because we felt that it would be a more earthy experience. And we were right about this. The show is recorded in the voice of none other than Mr Amitabh Bachchan himself and is quite spellbinding.

The Chaturbhuj temple is the only temple in Khajuraho that does not have erotic sculptures anywhere. The temple was built in the year 1100 CE by the King Yasovarman of Chandela Dynasty. The main idol in the sanctum of the temple is a 2.7m tall statue of the four-armed Lord Vishnu. The temple stands on a modest podium (chabutara) and has a sanctum, vestibule, and Mandap. However, it lacks an ambulatory. The temple also has an small entrance porch. It has three bands of sculptures on its outer walls.
