Villoondi Teertham - Discovering the Spiritual and Natural Wonders of Rameshwaram, India

Villoondi Tirtham is a sacred freshwater pond located in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, India. During our road trip from Noida to Rameshwaram we visited this place as well and thought of writing this blogpost. 


Location: Villoondi Tirtham is located around 6 kilometers from Rameshwaram town, on the way to Dhanushkodi.


Significance: Villoondi Tirtham is considered a sacred site by Hindus, and is believed to have healing properties. According to legend, Lord Rama created the pond by shooting an arrow into the ground, and the water that sprang up is said to have curative powers.


Rituals: Many locals and visitors come to Villoondi Tirtham to perform religious rituals and take a dip in the holy waters. It is believed that bathing in the pond can cure various ailments and bring good health and prosperity.


Scenery: Villoondi Tirtham is surrounded by lush greenery and is a serene and tranquil place to visit. The pond is fed by underground springs, and the water is crystal clear and refreshing.


Accessibility: Villoondi Tirtham is easily accessible by car or auto-rickshaw from Rameshwaram town. There is a small parking area near the pond, and visitors can walk down a flight of steps to reach the water.

Above photograph shows the bridge which takes people from the mainland to the corner where well is. People of the other corner are surrounding the well and you can see the well in photograph below.  


Above photograph shows the well which is on top of the bridge and it seems like that the well is at sea level, but water taste is completely fine. I didn't dare to taste but many people tasted it in front of me. A priest usually picks water from this well and serves to people visiting Villoondi Teertham. 


The best time to visit Villoondi Tirtham in Rameshwaram is during the winter season, from November to February. During these months, the weather is pleasant and cool, making it comfortable to spend time outdoors and take a dip in the holy waters.

And we felt that we had earned a dinner.
