Auroville in India : The City of Dawn and a Model for Spirituality & Sustainable Living

Auroville is a unique and experimental township located near Pondicherry in southern India. The township was founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa, also known as The Mother, and is dedicated to the ideals of human unity, peace, and spiritual growth. Auroville attracts visitors from around the world who come to explore its unique culture, sustainable living practices, and alternative approach to community living.

The Matrimandir is a stunning and peaceful space that is designed to help visitors connect with their inner selves and achieve a sense of inner peace and harmony. Visitors can participate in meditation sessions at the Matrimandir, or simply explore the beautiful gardens and parks that surround it. But please note that entry is not allowed inside the Matrimandir unless you have made advanced booking through emails or staying inside Auroville & has permissions to go inside the temple. 

Inside Auroville, one can walk up to the Matrimandir (the golden domed temple), but unless you are an Aurovillian or an approved guest, you cannot go in. In order to get initiated you need to write to Auroville and need to be willing to explore spiritual research. It seemed like a great place to experience and is an experimental township run by Aurovillians who have come and made it their home. We found this place interesting and will definitely explore it more closely sometime in future.

Auroville is also known for its sustainable living practices, which include organic farming, renewable energy, and eco-friendly technologies. Visitors can take a tour of the township to learn more about these practices and their impact on the environment. There is a free bus service that runs from the Auroville Information Centre to the Matrimandir. This bus service is operated by Auroville and is available for visitors who want to visit the Matrimandir but prefer not to walk.

Monday to Saturday: 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm
Sunday: Closed

It is important to note that the Matrimandir is closed on Tuesdays and during certain public holidays. Visitors are required to obtain a pass from the Auroville Visitor's Centre before they can enter the Matrimandir. The pass is free of charge but requires visitors to provide their name, nationality, and photo identification.

Visitors are also required to follow certain guidelines when visiting the Matrimandir, including wearing white clothing, removing shoes before entering the meditation chamber, and maintaining silence and reverence inside the Matrimandir. Photography is not allowed inside the Matrimandir, and visitors are requested to refrain from touching or disturbing any of the objects or surfaces inside the meditation chamber.

There is a famous tree in Auroville known as the "Tree of Meditation" or the "Meditation Tree" that showcases an impressive example of one tree wrapping around another. Although the tree you see in above photograph is different one.The tree is located near the amphitheater in the center of the township and is a popular destination for visitors who want to experience its unique beauty and energy.

The Meditation Tree is actually two trees that have grown together over time. The larger tree is a Banyan Tree, which has a sprawling canopy and impressive root system. The smaller tree is a Peepal Tree, which is known for its association with spiritual growth and enlightenment.

The two trees have grown so close together that the roots of the Peepal Tree have wrapped around the trunk of the Banyan Tree, creating a unique and striking appearance. Visitors to Auroville can sit under the Meditation Tree and enjoy its peaceful and meditative atmosphere, or simply admire its beauty and unique character.

And we felt that we had earned a dinner.
