Interiors of Indian Institute of Advanced Studies (Viceregal Lodge) in Shimla - A Photo Journey from Himachal Pradesh by Amit Aggarwal

At Photo Journey we have explored Viceregal Lodge many times, but this time Amit has brought a unique Photo Journey from Interiors of Indian Institute of Advanced Studies. Let's Check out...Very first photograph of Photo Journey shows high walls of Viceregal Lodge, which are covered with wooden layer over it. Interior of institute, stone building from outside, all wood work inside, its amazing. This chair is called President's Chair, where Viceroy of India used to sit for interacting with people. For guided tour of interiors one needs to buy entrance tickets, which costs Rs. 20 per adult and Rs. 6 per children. One also has to pay a camera fee and that includes mobile camera (they are quite strict about it).The interior tours not only show you the areas accessible to visitors , but also tell you the history behind the Viceregal Lodge...There is a huge Piano lying around one of the galleries inside Indian Institute of Advanced Studies. Access to Viceregal Lodge is free, but for entering into the building one needs to buy a ticket which is available near lush green grounds of Viceregal Lodge. There is a photo frame in one of the rooms of Viceregal Lodge, where one of the walls has a man and a lady. Both characters of this photograph are still UN-identified and don't know who clicked the photo..where and how come it is here in that room? Here is a photograph showing Wooden ceiling made in Kashmiri Khatamband style. This ceiling is made up of walnut tree wood.Furniture used inside Viceregal Lodge is beautifully designed and very well maintained till date. All furniture inside is 124 years old antique furniture still shinning. In total, 13 different Viceroys stayed at the Lodge starting with Lord Dufferin and ending with Mountbatten. There are two huge Notice-boards on one of the walls inside Viceregal Lodge. They used to display weapons here; all guns.. swords etc.. to showcase the powebut when it was converted to IIAS, these weapons were shifted to president house in New DelhiThere is a round table inside Indian Institute of Advanced Studies. Round table where Lord Mountbatten studied the draft of Indian partition. There is an interesting story about that table. It is actually made up of two halves, which is by design. But many people say that during partition, it was cut into two halves, because partition documents were signed on that table. It's considered that table was made up of two parts since beginning and it was by design. Not sure what's the truthHere is a photograph of huge table inside Indian Institute of Advanced studies where Shimla Conference happened in 1945.Now Viceregal Lodge is popularly known as Indian Institute of Advanced Studies. It's a resident institution now. They dont allow tourists to go up stairs. Students are alloted rooms there and they can stay here for 2 years for research on humanity and social sciences after completing their PhdAs its all wood inside, they had to install a full fledged fire-fighting system. (This was also the first building in Shimla which was electrified). There are water pipes all over the building sealed with wax, so that in case of fire breakout, wax can melt and water will be sprinkled automaticallyWhile writing on this blog, we tried to find more relevant details and found another blog with beautiful photographs of Indian Institute of Advanced Studies (Viceregal Lodge, Shimla) - http://www.bcmtouring.com/forum/travelogues-north-india-f61/shimla-colonial-feast-t15564-5/Its 185 years old Dutch wind clock still working, They wind it only once a week and it tells you the time, moon's shape and date. Amit loved the dutch wind clock. There were some electrical switches as well, which were imported from Germany...So here this Photo Journey from interiors of IIAS Shimla ends With this Amit wants to share a thought for folks who are interested in Photography. During guided tour to interiors of Viceregal Lodge either you can listen to the guide or click photographs. Both these things can't be done at same time. So recommended thing would be to have a round when you listen carefully to the guide and then go again with your camera. One needs to pay extra for cameraAll photographs are shared by Amit and more photographs from his Shimla Trip can be checked at - https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150730884906412.460380.770356411&type=For more photographs of Exteriors of Indian Institute of Advanced studies, check out - http://phototravelings.blogspot.com/2011/11/indian-institute-of-advanced-studies.html

Access to Viceregal Lodge is free, but for entering into the building one needs to buy a ticket which is available near lush green grounds of Viceregal Lodge. It seems, keys of this piano are made up of Elephant teeth.
