Hotel Jaswant Bhawan, Bikaner || Well located near Old town, reasonably priced, clean and comfortable hotel with comfortable parking for cars of all sizes

As it often happens with us, we found ourselves looking for a place to stay in Bikaner a couple of nights before our trip to the city. It wasn't tourist season per se, so Booking.com listed many properties that were within our budget.

As per our pattern during trips, we have seen that we often only go back to the hotels to sleep. And mostly we drive to places. So our criteria to choose a hotel is - clean and comfortable room with AC if going to a hot place, proximity to places to see, comfortable parking, and some character. We found all of the above in Jaswant Bhawan at Bikaner.

The room costed us about Rs. 1700 per night, and the reviews were excellent. Since as per the map, the hotel seemed to be in old Bikaner, we thought it prudent to check with the owner if we would be able to drive our vehicle to the hotel. Our friend had informed us that though there are many hotels in old Bikaner, we may have to park our car far away from the hotel if we choose to stay there. I called up the hotel and the gentleman on the other side assured us that we would be able to reach the hotel comfortably in our car and park within the premises. So we made the booking.

The hotel was earlier known as "Daudsar Dera" and was built in 1926 by Rao Bahadur Jaswant Singh Ji, the erstwhile (and last) Prime Minister of the Former State of Bikaner, Member of Constituent Assembly of India and Provisional Parliament, first Leader of Opposition of Rajasthan Assembly, Member of Rajya Sabha. Ad a result, you find many hints of the traditional Rajasthani Architecture, such as Jharokhas and Jaalis.

When you are driving toward the hotel through the typical old city roads, you will never be able to guess the look and feel of the hotel you are driving toward. You take a turn to enter the property, and the world opens up. There are green lawns, trees, spacious parking, and a rather charming red building in front of you.

We reached the hotel at around 4 pm and parked our car. The front desk was in a small room in the dining room. We were greeted by the caretaker Vikram. We also spotted the two pugs that were mentioned in many reviews online - however, both of them were snoozing on the chairs.

After a smooth check-in, and a cursory security check by the two cute pugs - Oscar and Dollar - who were by then awake, we followed Vikram to our room to the terrace.

The room was exactly what we had hoped for. Spotless white sheets, a working AC, hot water in the clean bathroom, some basic bathroom supplies, and a lot of comfort. It also had a working television, but we have found that at least during our travels, we have never felt the need to switch on the TV.

One appliance that we have come to appreciate more and more, especially on our road trips, is the electric kettle. We tend to start our journeys early - at 4:30 in the morning or 5. And as a result, having a strong cup of tea helps us immensely. With practice, we have learned to make strong and good tea with the kettle, teabags, and milk powder. Though carrying pre-prepared tea sachets, such as the Wagh Bakari ones, is also a good idea.

The location of the hotel is just perfect. Even though it is right next to the railway station, it is very quiet and peaceful. And it is walking distance from all places to see in old Bikaner. So after parking our car, we could explore the whole city on foot. And this was priceless. After having some interesting street food at the Station Rd, we came back to the hotel at around 9pm and were ready to crash.

We checked out of the hotel at night because we had planned to leave very early for Jaisalmer next morning. We asked about RO water and Vikram assured us that he would be there at the reception and would help us fill our water bottles. Early next morning, we bid goodbye to Vikram and Oscar and Dollar too, because they too met us at the reception when we were leaving. What we did not know then was that this would turn out to be our best stay option in this tour of Marwar, Rajasthan. If you have criteria similar to ours, Hotel Jaswant Bhawan is highly recommended. https://www.hoteljaswantbhawan.com/
