Wat Chiang Man - Know why you don't want to miss this stunning Temple in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Out of all cities I explored in Thailand, Chiang Mai is my favourite one and had wonderful time there. When we talk about Chiang Mai, some of the obvious things to do is exploring it's beautiful temples. Some of the popular temples to be explored in Chiang Mai are - Doi Suthep, which is little away from the city, Wat Chedi Luang which is located in middle of walled city of Chiang Mai, Wat Phra Singh - another beautiful temple close to Chedi Luang. This post will talk about another main temple in Chinag Mai which is worth visiting out of 300+ temples in this city of Thailand. This is the place Sunday market takes place which is pretty big and great place to buy art related stuff at a very reasonable cost. If you are in Thailand and want to do shopping, Chiang Mai is one of the best places in terms of stuff that you find here and the price range. Bangkok, Phuket & Pataya kind of places are more touristy hence relatively costly as well. Anyways, Wat Chiang Man was located at walkable distance for us, although it was not a small walk. This walk from city center of Chiang Mai to Wat Chiang Man is pretty interesting and you would see more temples on your way, including some newer versions/avatars. Above photograph shows interiors of one of the main temples in Wat Chiang Man. Most of these old temples of Thailand have building buildings/architecture and not just single temple. And when you visit 4-5 temples in Thailand, it becomes pretty easy to distinguish between older temple interiors/exteriors vs completely new temples. Although it varies from one city to another. For example - Temples of Ayutthaya are different from what you see in Chinag Mai in many ways. And that's most interesting to me when you see such diversity, otherwise I would also use that standard touristy sentence - 'all temples are the same :)'. But they are certainly not in Thailand. Wihan: the Phra Sila Buddha is housed inside the mondop behind the gates in Wat Chiang Man.

The only condition is that lot of vehicles are not parked on right side of the gate, otherwise they cover this view. It was almost sunset time when we visited Wat Chinag Man and that's why you see orange shade in overall photograph. The magical fact is that sky still looks bright blue. The square base supports a second level structure. If you look closely at the part just below golden dome on the top, you would notice few elephants carved out. The elephants seem to carry the upper levels of the building on their backs and it can be interpreted in many other ways. The gilded upper part of the chedi contains a bell shaped relic chamber in golden color. It's a smaller strcuture but we noticed lot of guides taking almost every tourist there. We were on our own, so just overheard few descriptions while passing by.
