Matheran - Only Place in India with Zero Pollution (By Pranav Agrawal)

In city life we live & travel in cement jungle. We need to breath and experience true nature and its love. Matheran is really such amazing place where nature is playing active role with you and where you can enjoy every breath with nature.

Matheran is the smallest hill station situated in the area of Karjat Tehsil in western side of Maharashtra. It is 90 km away from Mumbai as well as Pune, you can reach there by train or if u like to see the beautiful road way and are fond of car drives, zoomcar is the best option for you to opt. Zoomcar is a self-drive service available in many cities of India like Pune, Mumbai, Bangalore, Bhopal etc. Matheran is declared as eco sensitive region by the ministry of environment and forest government of India. Myles, Revv, Drivezy and UrbanDrive are few other self-drive options in India.

I went Matheran with my few friends and we preferred a self-drive as we are fond of car drives and the journey from Mumbai to Matheran is very scenic and beautiful. The most important thing to note is that vehicle or motorbikes are banned within the whole hill station. If you are reaching there by car or bike, you have to park it outside the main entrance of the hill station at the charge of 50rs for cars and 20rs for bikes.

You can explore the places of Matheran on foot or you can hire a horse if you want to treat yourself a little royal, I chose to treat myself royal as I was too tired due to driving continuously for 2 hours. You can get to hire horse at the entrance of the hill station.

There are 20 sight-seeing places in Matheran out of which I visited 9 and Louisa point is my personal favourite. Road to Louisa point is a little rocky and I recommend to hire a horse to save energy so you can roam around the whole station.

Matheran is a cold place with less humid and one can visit there at any time of the year. There are many resorts made over the station for the people who would like to stay at the beautiful place for a day or two. we returned back the same day after visiting Matheran.

There are many eating places over Matheran. I opted to eat on a tapir run by an old dada. I had vegetable Maggie at the dada’s shop. There are many tourists who come from Surat as it’s only 120kms away from Surat, so as they prefer vegetarian food, there are many restaurants and hotels which serve delicious vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Snack like Vada pav is available everywhere on Matheran as it has a great influence at the place. Foods like missal pav, jalebi are also served by the many tapir’s over the area. Chocolate fudge is also a speciality of Matheran as I got to known the place more.

Speaking my heart out, Matheran has been my favourite of all the places I have travelled in the world. I love the place due to its silence, scenic views and zero pollution as vehicles are totally banned in the area. Matheran’s beautiful sunsets, untouched nature is the main reason I love the place so much.

If you liked this post and found it helpful, I would request you to follow these things when traveling -

  1. Manage your waste well and don’t litter
  2. Use dustbins. Tell us if you went to a place and found it hard to locate a dustbin.
  3. Avoid bottle waters in hills. Usually you get clean water in hills and water bottles create lot of mess in our ecosystem.
  4. Say big no to plastic and avoid those unhealthy snacks packed in plastic bags. Rather buy fruits.
  5. Don't play loud blaring music in forests of jungle camps. You are a guest in that ecosystem and disturbing the locals (humans and animals) is not polite
