Wonderful Sayaji Baug of Gujarat - Best place to spend time in Vadodara with your family

During our Gujrat trip, we did day trip from Ahmedabad to Vadodara via Lothal. We reached early and there were some challenges with our hotel booking done through booking.com , so we came to Sayaji Park to sort out things. We had plenty of time after doing another hotel booking. On our very first day in Vadodara, we spent significant time around Sayaji Park and we loved the place because of various reasons which are well explained in this blogpost.

And the best part was to witness one of these peacocks spreading it's wings and dancing in front of deers in one of the sections of Sayaji Park in Vadodara. We spent around 10-15 minutes at this place and enjoyed this peacock enjoying the moves while changing the wing-spread at various moments. Sayaji Baug is a garden located in Vadodara town of Gujarat, India. Sayaji Baug is also known as Kamati Baug and it was built by Maharaja Sayaji Rao Gaekwad of Baroda. It is the biggest garden in Western India with the area surrounding more than 100 acres. It has one of the biggest floral clock in World and in India. Sayaji Baug is a garden located in Vadodara town of Gujarat, India. Sayaji Baug is also known as Kamati Baug and it was built by Maharaja Sayaji Rao Gaekwad of Baroda. It is the biggest garden in Western India with the area surrounding more than 100 acres. It has one of the biggest floral clock in World and in India. I didn't know about these facts until I went inside Sayaji Baug and saw them myself. 


There is no entry fees for Sayaji Baug in Vadodara. There are three entrance gates for Sayaji Baug. The main gate is at Sayaji square which is only 800 meters from the main city railway station and even less from the city bus stand. The third gate is at Rana Pratap square in Fatehganj area, and the second gate stands somewhere in between first and third gates. Area outside Sayaji Baug is pretty busy and there are main roads surrounding Sayaji Baug, so there is a pretty heavy traffic all around. Parking can be a little challenge, so if you are driving, be sure that that you have right parking space otherwise, there is no harm at parking at a little distance and walk to save time in finding parking slot. The Sayaji Baug also has a Zoo inside it which is situated on both the banks of the Vishwamitri river. This zoo inside Sayaji Baug was opened as part of the original park. The zoo offers 160+ types of 1100+ animals of various sizes and shapes. Asiatic lions are the most popular of the attractions at Sayaji Baug Zoo. Sayaji Baug Zoo also has a different bird zoo which has many different types of birds. Although we could see Crocodile section which is not side in the main zoo area.

There is a floral clock inside the Sayaji Baug and it's the first of its kind in the Gujrat state. The clock consists of an hour, minute and seconds hand that move on the 20 feet diameter dial. The machinery moving the clock is underground, giving the clock a natural look. While walking around the garden we noticed this clock and earlier we were debating if it's coincident that clock is showing current time but after checking on internet we found that it certainly has machinery. The planetarium also gives you information about a variety of planets and stars. Although we are sharing these details here but we didn't go inside as we didn't have enough time as well as it was almost the time to close the planetarium. Baroda Museum & Picture Gallery was built in 1894 to resemble the Victoria & Albert Museum of London. This museum preserves a rich collection of art, sculpture, ethnography & ethnology. The picture gallery has diverse works of art from both India and abroad. It also has a gallery of Tibetan art, Akota bronzed dating to the fifth century AD, and a collection of Mughal miniature paintings.

Sayaji Baug is very big garden and have lot of trees all around. It's very common to see families, group of friends having relaxed time inside the park. Lush green lawns provide a great place to sit and huge tress help in saving folks from direct sun.

Sayaji Baug also has a toy train running inside the park. The toy train ride used to run on a track of width 10 inches covering a distance of 3.5 km giving the entire view of the garden to riders. The ride was a gift to the children of Vadodara from the royal Gaekwad dynasty. Today there is still a Toy train but it's little different. The newer train has been introduced instead of this small toy train and in this joy train, adults can also sit. Joy train is bigger than the old toy train. A new platform with the name Swami Vivekananda Station is created for this train in Sayaji Baug. The train timings are from 10 A.M. to 10 P.M. and it is closed on Thursdays. During the full journey of about 20 minutes the people are informed about the heritage of Vadodara an that of Kamati garden through speakers in the train.    It was so awesome to see such addition to Sayaji Baug and we could sense locals as well as tourists enjoy taking a ride of the Joy Train.
