Happy Friendship Day to all Friends of PHOTO JOURNEY !!!

Dal Lake is one of the most popular lakes of India, which is located in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The urban lake, which is the second largest in the state, is integral to tourism and recreation in Kashmir and is nicknamed the 'Jewel in the crown of Kashmir' or 'Srinagar's Jewel'. The lake is also an important source for commercial operations in fishing and water plant harvesting. The shore line of the lake is encompassed by a boulevard lined with Mughal era gardens, parks, houseboats and hotels. Scenic views of the lake can be witnessed from the shore line Mughal gardens, such as Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir) and from houseboats cruising along the lake in the colourful shikaras. Dal Lake has some Floating gardens as well. The floating gardens, known as 'Rad' in Kashmiri, blossom with lotus flowers during July and August. The wetland is divided by causeways into four basins - Gagribal, Lokut Dal, Bod Dal and Nagin (although Nagin is also considered as an independent lake). During our trip to Shrinagar, we stayed in a hotel around Nagin lake only. Oldest Five star of the city is located on the bank of Nagin Lake. Lokut-dal and Bod-dal each have an island in the centre, known as Rup Lank (or Char Chinari) and Sona Lank respectively. There are some personal houses around Dal Lake and people have their own boats to travel from one place to another for getting stuff from Lake-Market, which is again located inside Dal Lake only. Houseboats and the Dal Lake are widely associated with Srinigar and are nicknamed 'floating palaces', built according to British customs. The houseboats are generally made from local cedar-wood and are graded in a similar fashion to hotels according to level of comfort. Many of them have lavishly furnished rooms, with verandas and a terrace to serve as a sun-deck or to serve evening cocktails. They are mainly moored along the western periphery of the lake, close to the lakeside boulevard in the vicinity of the Dal gate and on small islands in the lake. They are anchored individually, with interconnecting bridges providing access from one boat to the other. The kitchen-boat is annexed to the main houseboat, which also serves as residence of the boatkeeper and his family. Many boats on Dal Lake are used for selling stuff to tourists. Anything like Artificial Jewellery, Corns, Fruits, Cloths, Wooden Articles, Flowers etc. Some of the vendors can be seen selling digital-cards for still/video cameras. Each houseboat has an exclusive shikara for ferrying guests to the shore. A shikara is small paddled taxi boat, often about 15 feet and made of wood with a canopy and a spade shaped bottom. It is the cultural symbol of Kashmir and is used not only for ferrying visitors but is also used for the vending of fruits, vegetables and flowers and for the fishing and harvesting of aquatic vegetation. All gardens in the lake periphery and houseboats anchored in the lake are approachable through shikaras. The boats are often navigated by two boatmen dressed in 'Phiron' (traditional dress) and carry 'Kangris' or portable heaters on the boat.A shikara can seat about six people and have heavily cushioned seats and backrests to provide comfort in Mughul style. All houseboat owners provide shikara transport to their house guests free of charge. The shikara is also used to provide for other sightseeing locations in the valley, notably a cruise along the Jhelum River, offering scenic views of the Pir Panjal mountains and passing through the famous seven bridges and the backwaters enroute.

Today Friendship day is being celebrated in many countries including India and one of the followers of Photo Journey was not happy about no relevant post on the blog. So we thought of sharing some of the most beautiful natural gifts here for PHOTO JOURNEY Friends... A Very Happy Friendship Day !!!

Today is day of Flowers with Black/Dark Backgrounds. The day started with a Facebook chat with one of my friends. He wanted to know the secrets of such shots where we see Flower with Black/Dark Photographs. Of-course, on Photo Journey we are not going to share various techniques to achieve it. This Photo Journey is more about sharing some of the photographs we have shared in different stories and have colorful flowers with Black/Dark background. In the bottom there is a link to know techniques to achieve such photographs, which are quite simpleThe First photographic result is mix of some shooting techniques and Post-Processing in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. But the photograph just above is not processed at all. This one was shot during one of my trips to Jim Corbett National Park and these flowers were there in the resort, where we were staying. If you see carefully, above photograph is showing back side of the photograph and direction of shooting this flower was one of the main requirement to get black background. If the question about 'HOW' is bothering you too much, then check out - http://bit.ly/GW3ywW and come back here :Above Photograph was shot during Noida Flower Show in 2010 and the original photograph was not properly shot. So above photograph has lot of Photoshop work and it's basically over-processed.Blacks are something which makes any photograph more appealing. Many times people ask - 'Last night I clicked some photographs at my daughter's birthday. What should I do in Photograph to make them better'. The very simple answer from my side is Levels and Blacks. Because, the way people think about Photoshop is not right. There is lot of subjectivity involved when we talk about Post-Processing a photograph in Photoshop. How such questions can have simple answer. If you are also interested in trying such photographs, just check out - http://bit.ly/GW3ywW. This article talks about each photograph you are seeing in this Photo Journey and talking about the basic approaches followed for these.

When I started making this post for wishing you all Friendship Day, I also thought of making my basic clear about this special day and went through http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Friendship_Day ... And it seems, Friendship day is celeberated on different days/dates in different countries. In India, it's celebrated on first Sunday on August.

As expected, long time back Friendship day was created by a Greeting-Card Company. Today only we were chatting about all these days like Father's Day, Mother's Day etc. These can further be extended to Cousin's Day, Niece Day, Nephew Day... And of course GrandFather/GrandMother makes more sense :) ... I haven't googled, so some of them may have existed already...

Friendship Day celebrations take place on the first Sunday of August every year. The tradition of dedicating a day in honor of friends began in US in 1935. Gradually the festival gained popularity and today Friendship Day is celebrated in large number of countries including India. On this day people spend time with their friends and express love for them. Exchange of Friendship Day Gifts like flowers, cards and wrist bands is a popular tradition of this occasion. Every year new trends can be seen and most of them are brought by gift companies like Archies...

Last weekend I was at my Maternal Grandparents home in Himachal Pradesh. During monsoons it was everywhere green and kitchen garden of my grandmother was in full bloom. This photo Journey shares some of the photographs clicked around our home in small village called Chauntra in Hamirpur District of Himachal Pradesh.Very first photograph shows Pomegranates in one of the trees on the corner. This was first time, I was seeing large number of Pomegranates on this tree and hope that every piece survives till end. My grandparents avoid to use any pesticides, so many times it's hard to keep these fruits safe. This time we had a long discussion and if this year these fruits don't survive, I need to figure out appropriate ways of using pesticides with minimal impact on the quality of fruits.Apart from Pomegranates & Mangoes, there are various other plants having colorful flowers. Above photograph shows juvenile leaves of one of the plants in kitchen-garden. Orangish leaves looked amazing among all green ones around...Leaves of pumpkin Vine in our kitchen garden. Post monsoons is best time to be there at my grandparents place. Most of the times, they consume vegetables grown in their own gardens or fields. Taste of those vegetables and fruits is always amazing... I really miss the real taste of Cucumber in Delhi... While at Home, I always think of old days when we used to go to vegetable farms to get fresh cucumbers and we used to eat the younger versions with lot of excitement...Bougainvillea flowers were everywhere around the boundary of our house. They were in dark-pink and white color... White colored ones look better to me but pink ones were more photogenic :)Other day I was going to Rajouri Garden from Noida through Inner-circle and we were really happy to see well maintained plants of Bougainvillea flowers on divider, but suddenly we realized that Delhi Government only wants to maintain south side of the city and there was hardly any care of plants in North Delhi...Green Chillies... Apart from just adding taste to our food, green chilies have a lot of health advantages. Therefore, the wisest thing is to feel the burn and enjoy the benefits of green chilies, which can be enjoyed in different ways... Usually Green chillies are consumed fresh and at times pickled version is also preferred. In fact, many times green chillies are mixed with salt to use the mixture with fresh cucumbers...It's not possible that we don't see Coriander in Grandmother's Kitchen Garden. Coriandrum is also known as cilantro, Chinese parsley or dhania... Coriander leaves are plucked only when needed for best possible fragrance in food... Above photograph shows one of the isolated plant of Coriande, otherwise it's seen as bunch of plants...It's some form of mushroom which is not consumed but usullay seen in many vegetable farms of Himachal Pradesh. Especially it can be seen around compost store... Some of the local doctors (hakeems) use this in some medicine..Cucumber Tendrils... Cucumber is a creeping vine that roots in the ground and grows up trellises or other supporting frames, wrapping around supports with thin, spiraling tendrils. Vine has large leaves that form a canopy over the fruit. Having an enclosed seed and developing from a flower, botanically speaking, cucumbers are classified as fruits. However, much like tomatoes and squash they are often perceived, prepared and eaten as vegetablesA group of pumpkin tendrils tied strongly with mango tree in the garden...A photograph of Himalayan Herb which can be seen everywhere in Himchal Pradesh and other hilly states of India. It's illegal to grow this but various plants can be seen roadside and not sure if this one is so special as that of Malana or not...Smaller versions of Magoes and this times, they were huge numbers in Himachal Pradesh as well. Ideal process to eat them - Bring a bucket half-filled with water and put all mangoes (30-50) into the water. Have another bucket on other side and after that, it's self service :) ... My cousin sister was also there to give me company... So everyday she used to bring those tasty mangoes for everyone at home... Apart from one tree in Kitchen Garden, we have few more in vegetable farms and variety of every tree is different. So there are some sub-groups in family who like mangoes of particular treesAgain a photograph of pumpkin vine with shining Tendril... A tendril is a specialized stem or leaf with a threadlike shape that is used by climbing plants for support and attachment, generally by twining around suitable hosts. They can be formed from modified shoots, modified leaves, or auxiliary branches and are sensitive to airborne chemicals, often determining the direction of growth..Another Tendril having rest on one of the leaves of another vine. I am not sure about the name of vegetable this vine will give... probably will check with my Grandmother and update here..There are various other kinds of flowers including - Dahlia, Bougainvillea, Bird Of Paradise, Gerbera Daisy & Gladiolus etc..There are some Roses, which are usually used for morning pooja(worship) at home. Although my Grandfather doesn't like plucking flowers from garden, but he always fail to convince my grandmother :) ...

some friends acknowledge each other with exchanges of gifts and cards on this day. Friendship bands are very popular in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and parts of South America. With the advent of social networking sites, Friendship Day is also being celebrated online. Nowadays it is celebrated on the first Sunday of August rather than July 30. However, on July 27, 2011 the 65th Session of the United Nations General Asambly declared July 30 as "International Day of Friendship".
