Nikkor 14-24mm - A lens I want to have in my travel kit

Last week 3rd Mughal Motorsports Rally happened in Jammu and Kashmir. This Photo Journey shares some moments with these flying machines at various places on Mughal Road. Let's check out this Photo Journey and know more about Mughal Rally and how it went..This Motorsports rally is organized by Himalayan Motorsports with 'J&K Bank' and 'J&K Tourism department'. Usually it's a three days event, which started on 29th with vehicle scrutiny. Whole day is dedicated to certify all vehicles as per rally guidelines. Every vehicle is checked on technical ground and ensured that driver & navigator are well equipped to drive during next two days. Each vehicle is released from start point afterregular intervals and they have to cover a particular terrain to reach final destination. Of course, vehicle with min time wins this but there are some penalty clauses as well. So calculation of winners is not that simple. First winner gets 2 Lac rupees and there are 5 prizes worth 2Lac, 1.25L, 1L, 50K, 25K. Entry Fees for each vehicle is 20K.Other competition is called 'ENDURO', which is more about disciplined and controlled driving. Other name is TSD (Time, Speed & Distance), which means that each vehicle has to move with constant speed, to cover a distance in specific time period. Vehicle with minimum delta wins this competition.After scrutiny on 29th June, first day of rally had to start at 2:30am on 30th. First day was on Mughal Road which connects Shri Nagar to Jammu through Peer-Ki-Gali. It was a wonderful stretch and J&K Tourism is working on this region to developfor tourism. This whole stretch has wonderful landscapes surrounded by snow covered hills and of-course waterfalls which are created out of melting snow on peaks.Local administration had wonderful arrangements for the rally. Most of the these roads were frozen for civil traffic, as it could have been dangerous. There are more than enough security on each turn of the Mughal Road. Ambulances, support vehicles and all other relevant resources were deployed upfront. All these rallies need lot of planning from organizer's point of view as well as local administration.First day completed with few minor break-downs due to which some of the participants were disqualified for day-2. One of the gypsy toppled and two girls started again within few minutes. It's amazing to see the passion & energy of these folks. Also this sport needs disciplined planning and straegic approach to reach the destination with full safety measures and keep yourself in competition. Every Vehicle has a driver and a navigator. Navigator is very important role of this game, which has critical responsibility with him. S/he keeps record of whole route and all minute details. So S/he keeps guiding the driver about the next movements.After tiring day on 30th June, it was time to relax for some time as next day had to start at 3:30 am again. So on first day, we started from Shrinagar and came back to Shrinagar after long drive through Peer-ki-gali. Second day was on other side of the Mughal Road. So we started at around 3:30am from Hotel Centaur (Shrinagar) and reached Sinthan Top between Kishtwar & Daksum. Sinthan Pass is a wonderful place capped with snow all around. Chilly wind was flowing around Sinthan HillsSecond day stretch had all dirt roads with melting snow flowing all over. All the roads were extremely narrow and plenty of turns. From the top of Sinthan Pass, we could see a stretch of 20 kilometers which was full of curved roads into the valley. On first day EXTREME folks had come back to Shrinagar, while ENDURA folks had gone to Jammu. On second day ENDURA folks had to come back through Sinthan Pass only. So, for EXTREME folks it was to & fro stage and for ENDURA, it was one side stage from Jammu to ShrinagarDifferent kinds of vehicles were participating in Mughal Rally, many of them were gypsys and others were TATA vehicles like XENON, SAFARI... Mahindra XUV500 was also there... Maruti's Grand Vitara... Detailed information about eligibility criteria for participating in Mughal Rally, check out - http://www.xplorearth.com/program.htFirst day of the rally was towards Rajouri district of Jammu&Kashmir and second day was towards Anantnag district.Third day is kept for prize distribution and podium finish ceremonies. But this year, these ceremonies were cancelled due to death of a rally participant on second day. One of the ENDURA vehicle went out of the way and got down to a deep valley. Driver died on the spot and navigator went to coma for some time. So third day ceremonies were cancelled.Some high end motorbikes also participate in Mughal Rally. After the event, one another scrutiny takes place to ensure that all vehicles were in right state and none of them was using any avoidable material.

Recently a friend reached out to figure out which camera is appropriate for her daughter, who is in School and has keen interest in Photography. She was mainly confused between Mirrorless and DSLR. Then we started exploring options across brands but photographer's mom has affinity towards Nikon. During that research, we concluded to order Nikon D5600, but the close competitor was Nikon D3500. I thought of dumping all key insights which helped us making the decision. Since such questions come multiple times, it's better to capture my thoughts about the camera.




Few weeks back I saw a special email in my mail-box, which was an invite for a blogger meet by Nikon. I can't express how excited I was when I saw that email. I have been using Nikon equipments for a long time and a fan of classic Nikon shutter sound. Since it was Nikon and event was scheduled on a weekend, decision was easy - let's go and make best use of this opportunity to meet like minded folks from the industry.So on 19th October, I headed towards B-Bar which is located in Select City Walk mall at Saket, Delhi. It was easy to locate and event was planned to start at 1pm. As usual, the 'Delhi' blogger meet started at around 2pm as many of the blogger friends were wearing Delhi-Watch. But in the meantime, I got a chance to make meet Rohan & Subir and also made few new blogger friends. During some of our conversation Mr Raghu Rai walked towards the lobby and we all were more excited to listen to him.Seeing Raghu Rai at the event made my day. It was great to learn from master Photographer of India. I have interacted with him in past as well but it was definitely a different experience where he had come to meet some of the selected set of bloggers from north India. After Raghu Rai's talk on photography, he also addressed some of the questions asked by audience in the hall. Raghu Rai has been using Nikon equipments, ever since he started photography and he mentioned about the mount of Nikon, which was new to me. It seems Nikon has been using same quality mount in their cameras, which was used in some of their initial SLRs (about 50 years ago). It sounded awesome. Imagine the quality level which Nikon achieved in old days and that still holds good till date. Raghu Rai shared some candid moments from his initial days into photography, when finding right cameras & lenses in India was not easy and he had to convince someone who is supposed to come to India from other countries where Nikon had good presence with wide variety of options. I can keep writing about this special talk by Raghu Rai, but would stop here to continue with other activities form the evening.Hiroshi Takashina, MD Nikon India, was also there. He talked about Nikon India and the overall plan about the event. He introduced us to Nikon India Technical team which is comprised of some of the brilliant photographers from different genres. Mr Hiroshi Takashina has visited 92 cities of India to exactly understand the way their customers are using their technology and what else can be offered to Indian Market. This really shows the amount of dedication put by a company to care about their users.Raghav Mandava was there on stage to do anchoring and he made this event a fun. He was superb with his subtle jokes and amazing expressions. To know more about him, check out - His Facebook PageWhen we entered at 1:00 pm at B-Bar, the environmen was something like this :) - A punctual blogger sitting alone in the foreground ; Nikon folks are busy with Mr Raghu Rai, in the background ; and PR folks enjoying the moments in the middle. But the ambiance didn't allow anyone to get bored there. B-Bar is no doubt a great place to spend time with your friends.After ordering our drinks and snacks, we all moved towards the main hall where the Nikon India Team was all set to share Photography gyan with us. More than the photography gyan I was more inspired by the photographs shown by each presenter there. All of them were photographers at one point of time and then joined Nikon as Technology experts. I loved their job as they keep travelling to different places to try out their products and understanding the areas of improvements themselves. What an ideal job for a photographer. Many times during the presentation, I was about to ask that how can I fit into Nikon India :). In fact, I was about to ask if they have Software division in India as well.All of those presentations were full of useful knowledge and helped in understanding some of the myths from Digital SLR industry. Team started with introduction to FX & DX cameras, basic differences and target users for both. During these talks, team introduced us to smallest & lightest full frame camera - Nikon D610 . At the same time the team showed real power of 18-55 kit-lens which usually comes with most of the cameras. Somehow, this is one of the disregarded lens. I could personally connect to it as I have used this lens for early 4 years of my photography. And I have got some brilliant shots which were published in magazines & newspapers. At the same time, I am a strong believer of more investment in lenses as they give real power which can be reused even if we change the camera body. And at the end I am more confused :). For my recent reviews I have started adding verdicts and in past at least 40 friends and family went ahead with my verdict and bought cameras I suggested and all of them are happy with what they have. And that makes me more confident in suggesting products which are either used by me for some project or by my serious photographer friends. So no difference from that standpoint.


After a very successful post about comparison of Canon 1300D and Nikon D3300, lot of folks asked to compare Nikon D3400 as it's the latest model available right now. Since both the cameras are from same brand, let me start with similarities and which means no difference at all when we say similarities. 1. Nikon D3300 as well as D3400 has 24 megapixel APS-C 2. CMOS sensor 3. 1920*1018 video resolution 4. Nikon F Mount 5. 3” Fixed type screen 6. Optical (pentamirror) viewfinder 7. 5 fps continuous shooting Now let's look at things where these cameras vary and how much. Let's talk about Nikon D3400 and how it wins over Nikon D3300 - 1. Max ISO in D3400 is better than D3300, which would be helpful in case of low light conditions. 2. Battery life of D3400 is better than D3300. You will be able to shoot 1200 images in comparison to 700. I am not very sure how important this would be for normal user. 700 shots is a good number for one time, unless you plan to go on a trek and can’t get access to charging point for a week :). 3. Nikon D3400 offer higher dynamic range in comparison to 4. Nikon D3300 5. Nikon D3400 has bluetooth, if you are looking for this feature. 6. Another interesting feature in Nikon D3400 is Smartphone_remote control, which is not present in D3300 One thing which is there in Nikon D3300 but not present in Nikon D3400 is Microphone port. People who want to shoot documentaries or shot videos with better audio quality, Nikon D3300 is definite choice over D3400 unless other positives of D3400 are also crucial. In that case, anyway you need to look at some other option. If I look at the price difference, Nikon D3400 is just 2000 rs expensive in comparison to Nikon D3300. Earlier Canon used to launch high megapixel cameras. Nikon offers 24 megapixels in Nikon D3300 while Canon 1300D has 18mp. That is a significant difference but 18m is not bad at all. Personally I don't bother much about these high numbers, especially when we talk about entry level DSLR, which is mainly for home users or beginners. Having a bigger size is necessary to support more pixels and hence you see bigger sensor-size in Nikon. I would give + to that. Let me share an interesting fact about MP and Sensor size. If you have higher megapixels on same sized sensor, it's no value addition and in fact a loss. You would see more noise in low light photographs clicked with camera which offers high MP on smaller sensor. So keep this factor in mind when you buy a camera phone as well. Nikon D3300 also offers more more AF points as compared to Canon 1300D. 11 Vs 9. It's pretty helpful and very important. This gives you more flexibility in focussing on some specific parts of the frame. Although difference of 9 vs 11 is not huge, but it would be unfair to expect more difference at this cost. ISO range is also higher in Nikon D3300 but having a huge range doesn't really mean that everything fine. It's again about sensor capabilities vs ISO. More ISO means that you can click better clicks in low light by avoiding camera shake. Personally I prefer higher ISO range because noisy image is always better than shaky image, so it works well in worst light conditions. So Nikon wins on this. Nikon D3300 offer 5fps and Canon D1300 supports 3fps. I have picked screenshots of spec comparisons from other place but all detailed reviews are mine. In above screenshot ignore the last green on the left (Canon 1300D). More weight of camera can't be better :) Canon 1300D wins on Wi-Fi and NFC. And if this is something which is must for you then you can probably ignore other factor because comparative offerings of Canon 1300D are not bad Verdict - Both the cameras offer good set of features but Nikon D3300 certainly offers more. Even the cost of Nikon D3300 is less than Canon 1300D as of today (17th April'2016 - Nikon D3300 - 23,885 Rs Vs Canon 1300D - 26,995 Rs ). I would recommend to go for Nikon D3300 over Canon 1300D, unless the price ranges change. Please drop your comments if you have any specific questions around this.

Smartphones have improved over a period of time and we have reached a phase where almost every camera is good. Now we can certainly debate how that's possible and shouldn't we compare one camera with other & see which one is better. That's a valid point, but I go via other route - identify what you need in a phone-camera and then find a best device. On 16th of October Fujifilm orgaized their first Blogger meet at Park Hotel in Delhi. Event was specially designed for some of the premier bloggers in the city and had a launch ceremony during the end. Let's check out this Photo Journey to know more about the meet..I took half day leave from office and reached Park Hotel at 2:50pm. Event had to start at 3:00pm. I was the first blogger to reach the venue and stand-up comedian Rajneesh Kappor was there. i had attended one of him performance at India Habitat Center, Lodhi Estate(Delhi). Talked to him and he was more interested in knowing the kind of people coming for the evening. Planned start time 3:00pm in Delhi means that starting will not happen before 3:30pm and there can be delay of 1 Hr. So I had enough time to see Fujifilm Digital Cameras which they had placed on some of the counters around conference hall. Whole hall was full of round tables placed beautifully. Checked some of the Fujifilm Mirrorless cameras and SLRs. I was surprised to see DSLRs Fujifilm had. They had no option to change lenses. All of them had fixed lenses with amazing zoom of about 600mm. At one place I found it bad but looking at mass market, probably this is one of the good approach for home use or amateur photographers.More bloggers started joining on first floor of Park Hotel. Arvind Khanna is trying Mirrorless cameras at Fujifilm Blogger Meet. Fujifilm had great range of mirror-less cameras and I personally liked the results. They created a shooting area with some objects lying under good light. In Poiint-n-shoot, Fujifilm has good range. Anyways, it was time to move ahead and proceed with other parts of event.Bloggers started joining in and it was one of the great moments when you meet fellow who you follow online. Thanks to all such events and we bloggers keep meeting to discuss new ideas & news in detail. While catching up with Bloggers, I noticed one of the familiar faces sitting there. He is there on my Facebook account. After putting some pressure on my mind, I could recall his name and other relevant details :) . Hemant Sood, who is a photographer and popularly known for his fashion work. I had a quick chat with him and it was a nice interaction. He was there to share Fujifilm Camera reviews with bloggers.After a brief chit-chat with fellow blogger over a cup of coffee there was a call for everyone to be seated and start the evening. Fujifilm Marketing folks welcomed all bloggers and shared some interesting facts about Fujifilm and technologies they share with customers or other businesses. During his talks he shared about X series cameras, what is so special about those and Fujinano lenses. Then some bollywood movie-examples were shared which were shot with Fujifilm Lenses. Movies like Dabang & Slumdog Millionaire etc. As the event started, there was an announcement for every blogger to start tweeting about the event & Fujifilm with hash-tag #fujifilmxisin and one of the blogger would win a Fujifilm Camera. Initially I has hesitant about it as I always avoid to use Twitter. I have linked my Twitter account to pick automatic updates from the blog and that's it. After looking around for 5 minutes, I also thought to give it a try. At the time, there was another announcement about being attentive to the details makreting folks were sharing. A quiz was planned after the talk and winners got T-Shirts. I also managed to get one :). Some of the other bloggers on my table got multiple and ours table was winner of-course :) Sangeeta, Arvind and Kriti rocked the show !After a quick quiz Mr Rajneesh Kappor came to the stage. He is a popular standup comedian in Delhi and goes to various parts of country for big comedy shows. He was really good, although I felt that people sitting there were not that supportive :) ... I loved the way he make fun of day to day things and he is awesome with Delhi Jokes :)Most of the bloggers were carrying cameras but I didn't see any Fujifilm camera with any of them. Most of the bloggers were having Nikon or Canon DSLRs. DSLRs and Phone-Cameras are most popular these days. And slowly it's becoming hard to see point-n-shoot cameras. During one of the talks Fujifilm folks also mentioned about the same that Point-n-Shoot market is facing good competition from Smart-Phone CamerasEnvironment all around the conference hall was quite friendly by the end of Rajneesh's session. It was really great and some of the marketing folks in the back were quite involved in whole comedy session. Their laugh was completely different from rest of the halSoon after Rajneesh's performance, Hemant Sood joined us on stage. He shared some great thoughts around Photography and basic tips for bloggers. I must say that he was quite honest about some of the basic facts about photography. I found him quite open about the role of importance of Equipments in Photography. He talked in detail about basic functions of Camera and then kept things open for bloggers to focus more on visuals rather than rules we see on web or books.During the end some celebrity was expected to join and announce the winner of Twitter contest. She came to the stage and it was extremely difficult for me to recognize her. This year first time Canon organized Photomarathon in India on 18th September, 2011. Event was about inviting photographers at one place to work on a on-spot themes around various things around our lives. Some of very well known Indian Photographers were invited there and here are few photographs from main podium !!!Soha Ali Khan's joined Canon Photomarathon and welcomed all esteemed Photographers on the stage !!! This photograph is with Mr. Dinesh Khanna !!!Soha Ali Khan Welcoming Mr. Prashant Panjiar on stage !!! Prashat and Dinesh are two main people who are working hard towards hosting first Photo Festival in India !!! Both of them are also associated with Nazar foundation, which initiated the thought of having Photo Festival in India in partnership with IHC...Soha Ali khan is also a keen Photographer and she was invited for this event by Canon. Most of the photographers went ahead and started clicking her photographs ... I was lazy enough to stand up to move forward and used my zoom lens instead :)Sorry for very low quality photographs :(Soha Ali Khan was one of the main attraction of this event and most of the photographers forgot the main idea of this photomarathon :)I think she was most clicked subject during Canon Photomarathon 2011...Here Mr. Dinesh Khanna addressing all photographers from various parts of country. I liked his answer for 'Tell us about your Best Photograph ever' - He said 'My Best Photograph is that, which will be clicked tomorrow' ... which means that always there is scope of improvements and all of us do the same... At times we feel very special about a photograph but after a few days we feel very normal about the same as we tend to improvise...Soha sincerely listening to great Indian Photographers on stage ...Prashant Panjiar sharing his opinion about Photography in India and little bit about devices offered by Canon !!!Mr. Alok Bhardwaj with Soha Ali Khan at Canon Photomarathon 2011 !!! They were interacting on stage about photography which was not so interesting :) (***My personal opinion)Suddenly Soha realized that all the Photographers are shooting her on stage and she should be standing in casual pose for a long time...Soha took all the glamor of this show and all I was really disappointed to see all Judges standing below stage and no one asking them for seating or anything... Being a Photographic event, I was expecting good respect for our known Photographers !!!Anyway, good to hear all great people from Photography Industry. Sorry I didn't find any sharable photograph of Akashendu Das and Subi Chaturvedi ... Will share more photographs from this event in few days... Keep watching this space for the same...

@Shrini - Ohh wow. That will be super awesome. I have been using 10mm fish eye and loving it. The only challenge to compose better photographs with fish eye perspective.

Main places to see & Top things to do around Dalhousie : Stunning Hill Station in Himalayan State of India

  Dalhousie is one of the most popular Hill Stations in Himachal  and there is lot to explore around Dalhousie. This is small and very well maintained town in Chamba region of Himachal Pradesh . This Photo Journey shares some of the exciting places around Chamba and how to plan a good one day tour through Khajjiar, Chamba & Chamera etc. CHAMERA HYDROLIC PROJECT Chamera Hydroelectric Project is located in Banikhet, 7 kms from Dalhousie. The water body near the lake is very scenic and is a popular boating spot. Chamera Dam is around 40 kilometers from Chamba Town. It takes approximately 1.5 hrs to reach the place is road condition is good. Overall it’s a little dry terrain as compared to Dalhousie and Khajjiar. And temperature also goes up as we go towards Chamera Dam.  As you move out from Chamba town, you follow Ravi river for some time and then take right. After 45 minutes of drive, you get a glimpse of Chemera Dam.
